One of VHHA’s core functions is to act as your representative and advocate before the Virginia General Assembly on policy issues affecting the delivery, quality, accessibility and cost effectiveness of health care. Some of the tactics employed include:
VHHA works with a broad group of supporters, businesses, coalitions, civic organizations and community leaders to help improve public policy. The association also has undertaken an aggressive program to educate all members of the General Assembly on the issues that most affect their constituents. Key components of this include generating advocacy messages through voterVOICE, inviting legislators to tour facilities and meet with staff and meeting with legislators in the community.
VHHA deploys a team of seven full-time staff members at the General Assembly during the legislative session. In addition, numerous health systems have in-house lobbyists or outside contract lobbyists representing them as well. VHHA coordinates with these lobbyists as well as representatives of other health care and business organizations in order to provide the most comprehensive legislative support at the Capitol.
VHHA’s Political Action Committee, HosPAC, is one of the largest PACs in Virginia. HosPAC makes contributions to campaigns of individuals who understand the vital role hospital and health systems play in their communities, both as health care providers and as major employers, and will help make sound health care policy a priority if elected.
