Course Curriculum
This webinar will describe the role of non‐physician practitioners (NPPs) and how they are
utilized by hospitals, critical access hospitals (CAHs), and clinics. It will discuss how
they are reimbursed for services under Medicare and other third‐party payers. Included in
this presentation will be information regarding proper coding conventions and utilization
of modifiers for NPPs. The webinar will help differentiate between “freestanding situations”
and “provider‐based situations,” and identify the various NPP requirements under
Medicare. It will work through several case studies to highlight the coding, billing and
claims filing processes for NPPs. It will also identify important compliance issues that
affect NPs, PAs and CNSs. Finally, it will explain how NPs, PAs and CNSs relate
to the Medicare physician supervision rules.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the range and type of non-physician practitioners that are utilized by hospitals, CAHs and clinics of all types
  2. Differentiate and discuss NPs, PAs, and CNs and their use by hospitals and clinics
  3. Discuss how non-physician practitioners are reimbursed for services under Medicare and other private third-party payers
  4. Differentiate between 'freestanding' situations and 'provider-based' situations
  5. Identify the interplay between the MPFS and APCs for non-physician reimbursement in different setting
  6. Discuss the important compliance issues, including the Place of Service (POS), surrounding the use of NPPs
  7. Discuss the compliance issues relative to CAHs and rural health clinics (RHCs)
