Hospitals with Negative Margins Maintain Community Commitments

Hospitals are integral partners in promoting and protecting community health. But like any other enterprise, hospitals have budgetary constraints that can be swayed by external forces. That reality invites questions about how strong hospitals’ community commitment is when money is tight. Does funding for voluntary community benefit events and programs promoting health correspondingly decline? The simple answer is “no.” As the graph below illustrates, community spending by hospitals with negative operating margins actually grew over a three-year tracking period. Those results demonstrate that even in challenging times hospitals with negative margins continue their commitment to community health and wellbeing by providing activities such as health fairs, prenatal classes, after-school programs, diabetes education, and immunization clinics.
