Health Care Remains a Top Employer in Many Virginia Communities

Not only is Virginia’s health care delivery system a provider of essential medical services and treatment to patients, it also is one of the Commonwealth’s most important economic engines. To assess the economic importance of health care providers, the VHHA Data and Analytics team performed a review of 2017 data from the Virginia Labor Market Information (LMI) to determine the percentage of Virginia’s 133 localities (95 counties and 38 independent cities considered county-equivalents1) in which a hospital or other health care sector enterprise is a top employer. The analysis found that the health care industry is a top 10 employer in 66 percent of Virginia’s counties (see Figures 1 and 2 below). There are 12 Virginia counties in which a hospital or health system ranks as the top employer in that locality (see Figure 3 below). (6/3)
