Virginia Hospitals Continue to Earn National Recognition for Clinical Excellence

February 15, 2022

In Latest Evaluation by Healthgrades, Multiple Virginia Hospitals are Among Top 5 Percent in the Nation for Overall Clinical Performance

RICHMOND, VA – Hospitals across Virginia have again been named to Healthgrades’ list of America’s 250 Best Hospitals for 2022. Healthgrades reviews millions of health care records associated with patients treated at nearly 4,500 American hospitals to compile its annual list. This year, a dozen Virginia hospitals have been named to Healthgrades’ list of the 250 best U.S. hospitals (representing the top 5 percent of American hospitals). Many Virginia hospitals were similarly recognized last year.

The latest recognition from Healthgrades comes in the wake of the Fall 2021 Leapfrog Group Patient Safety Grade rankings that rated Virginia as the top state in the nation for patient safety based on the share of hospitals that earned “A” grades.

“We’re fortunate in Virginia to have world class hospitals and health systems that strive to deliver clinical excellence, improve community health, and provide a positive experience to hospitalized patients and their families,” said Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton. “Our hospitals have maintained that focus even while contending with all the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. These new Healthgrades rankings are further confirmation that Virginia hospitals are a true asset to the Commonwealth.”

Virginia hospitals that earned a place on Healthgrades’ best hospitals list are: Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, Chippenham Hospital (HCA Virginia), Henrico Doctors’ Hospital (HCA Virginia), Inova Alexandria Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital, Johnston-Willis Hospital (HCA Virginia), Parham Doctors’ Hospital (HCA Virginia), Retreat Doctors’ Hospital (HCA Virginia), Reston Hospital Center (HCA Virginia), and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital. Several of those hospitals – Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, Parham Doctors’ Hospital, Retreat Doctors’ Hospital, and Sentara Princess Anne Hospital – are rated among the 100 best hospitals in the nation by Healthgrades.

In addition to the Healthgrades and Leapfrog Group rankings, Virginia in recent years has consistently been acknowledged as one of the states best prepared for public health emergencies in leading national scorecards. Similar to the clinical excellence and patient safety rankings, those evaluations are another positive reflection of the work done by Virginia hospitals to prepare for, and respond to, large scale events that impact community health.
